If you are looking for a free method to backup Instagram messages, try TextVibes. It is rated as an easy, quick and reliable method. It is a smooth process and there are tutorials to help you if you are stuck at any stage. Backing up data from Instagram is one of the toughest platforms to use as the process is not as simple as other platforms. However, if you follow the simple steps below you should have no issues.
The video below is a quick step-by-step tutorial on how to backup Instagram messages on Android.
Step 1: Download the TextVibes application onto your mobile device (You will need to do this by going onto your Google Play Store app and searching for TextVibes).
Step 2: Open your Instagram app to start the backup process. Instagram messages can only be saved from physically opening the app itself. Unfortunately you cannot save your data off Instagram by not launching the app first. This is because you need to request your data from Instagram.
Step 3: Navigate yourself to the top right corner of your screen. Click on the three horizontal lines (the symbol for menu). Once you have clicked on the menu button click on "settings". The settings button can be found at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Your settings will now be opened so click on "security". We are currently in the process of requesting Instagram for your data.
Step 5: The next thing you need to do is to scroll down to the "Data and history" section and click on "Download data".
Step 6: Your have now successfully downloaded your data. So, you now need to request your data from Instagram. To do this you need to confirm the email address you want to send your data to. Once, you have typed in the email address you want Instagram to send your data to click on "Request Download".
Step 7: Unfortunately, Instagram can take some time to send your data to you. Be patient as it can take up to 48 hours. This is because Instagram is processing your request. Once Instagram has processed your data they will send you an email. Keep checking the email account you requested your data to be sent to as Instagram will send the email to that account.
Step 8: When you receive the email click on the link in the email. The link will re-direct you to a page that looks like the mockup below. Click on the file name "Download data - part one" to download that file to your mobile device. It must be noted that you must select that specific file name as this is where your Instagram dm's are saved (Part 1). The other parts contain other data, not your Instagram messages.
Step 9: Once you have downloaded the zip file click on "open" and select "TextVibes". This will send your Instagram dm's to TextVibes. By doing this you have saved your data securely and can easily restore your data at any stage.
Step 10: Open the TextVibes app (all your messages and media attachments will be backed up). If you would like to explore a chat by specific date you can access them by clicking on "Pick A Day". The Calendar function will allow you to scroll through the different months and click on the date you are looking for. If you would like to get a surprise click on "Daily Surprise". This option will allow our Artificial Intelligence to select a memory from your chats. It will present you with the memory and you will be able to save the memory into diaries.
2. Backup Instagram messages with email
Recently there has also been an influx of people wanting to take a break from social media. The problem is that they don't want to delete Instagram because they do not want to lose all their messages and photos. Instagram has created an in-app function that lets you request your data from them. If you would like to download your Instagram messages and save them on your email follow these simple steps:
- Open your web browser and go to Instagram.com
- Click on your profile picture found at the top right corner of your screen
- Click on "Settings" from the drop down options
- On the left hand side there are different options, tap on "Privacy & Security"
- Scroll down and click on "Request Download"
- Enter the email address you would like your data to be sent to
- It will ask you what information format you want to download your data in. Both options are fine but "Json" is better
- Instagram can take a while to send you your data so just be patient. Keep checking the email account you gave as they will send the file with your data in to that email address
3. Backup Instagram messages with screenshots
Another method people use to save data is the screenshot. This the the quickest method to save data. However, the downside of this method is that it takes up storage space on your phone and in your photo gallery. It is also not a good method to use if you are looking for a method to easily restore your data. This method requires you to physically scroll through your photo gallery to find the screenshot you are looking for. A tip to make this method more productive would be to save your screenshots into a folder in your photo gallery. That way you will only need to scroll through that specific folder to find the data you are looking for. A positive aspect of this method is that Instagram does not inform the user that you are taking a screenshot of their photo, video or story. Steps on how to take a screenshot on Android:
- Scroll through Instagram to find what you are wanting to save
- Centre it
- Press and hold the power button alongside the volume-down button
- Depending on what type of device you are on it will either show you a thumbnail of the screenshot or you will find the screenshot in your Photos app (your photo gallery on your phone)
